India and China are both undergoing significant economic changes. Take China first: they are industrializing what has been primarily an agrarian society. The jobs they have created have taken manufacturing from the West and Japan, no doubt. There is also no doubt it has increased their appetite for energy. Not just gas and oil, but hydroelectric as well.

India is a bit different. They have a large population and have not really targeted manufacturing as heavily as China has. India has an economy that is stratified from very highly educated and skilled knowledge workers, to masses performing menial labor. Their appetite for energy has been steadily increasing for two decades now. Have they attracted jobs away from the US? You bet they have

China and India have much larger populations than the United States. Contrary to what most Americans believe, these two nations are much more fuel efficient that the U.S. Take for instance the average Chinese car. It gets more miles per gallon than a similar American automobile. Americans seem to want big huge gas guzzlers. And who in their right mind would want a Hummer? Also, count the times someone does not put a signal on when they change lanes, and count the times someone passes you at an unacceptable speed.
