There are several things a QB is doing at the line of scrimmage prior to the snap. First, he may be calling out blitzes or changing the play based upon how the defense is lined up. One or more plays may be called in the huddle but it might get changed at the line of scrimmage if the defense is set up a certain way. For example, if the defense is showing a cover-2, the QB may change a recievers route. This chagning of plays is called an audible. The words and nubmers the QB use are a specific code to that team so the defense does not know what the QB is calling. Some of the audible may be pure bunk to keep the defense guessing.

The other thing the QB is doing is calling the cadence or snap count. Only the offense knows what word the ball will be snapped on. A general cadence may be "Down, Set, Hut, Hut, Hut" The offense may go on down, go on set, or go on the first hut, the second hut, or the third hut. THe word 'HIKE' is not required. They can just as easily go on the word "Kalamazoo" (but I have never seen that done).

Sometimes a quarterback will call an audible. Yes, they say the numbers on every snap, but sometimes there are "real" audibles and sometimes they are fakes to through the other team off.

Example: You're the quarterback. You see the other team is looking like they will blitz. But the play you called is not good against a blitz. You say, :"Blue 37, Blue 37" but blue is not the active color for an audible right now(sometimes it varies by quarter or game, etc. Are you changing the play or simply faking ? Football has little mind games like this which are a factor.

a lot of the time they don't mean anything, but if the quarterback audibles then the numbers tell the new play. Also, some of the plays called in a huddle will depend on the formation the defense sets up in, the quarterback will wait to read the defense and then by using the numbers let his teammates know the play that way.

blue 82 blue 82,hut hut hike.....all a bunch of stuff to throw off defense, it might be calling a new play, it might not. They usually hike ball on 1 or 2 or 3. So a qb puts his hand under centers butt "Blue 82, Blue 82, on second blue wr goes in motion, hut hut hike" And then bears qb hits reciever in the butt w ball, and it is second down and ten,........where or where is Walter Payton.

They are "audibles", which are called to change the play depending on how the QB feels the defense will react to the play already chosen. They are usually called only to throw the defense off and try to get them to think the offense is changing the play when they aren't.

All the above and at times the QB calls out the defense set.

They're typically called "Audibles." They're used to change the play, the formation, a WRs route, blocking schemes...or just to throw off the defense.

Each number and code name is for a different position. They listen to that and have memorized what to do for each call.
