OMG! everyone is so dumb. (except for the first answer)
hold down command (that's the key with the apple logo on it) option+escape. hold these three keys down at the same time. you should get a diaglog box that says Force Quit Applications
If that doesn't work, try going to the dock and clicking on the finder icon (the blue smily face thing) then go to the apple menu and select force quit

Ctrl + Open Apple + Esc will open the equivalent of task manager on a Mac. If it's completely frozen, hold in the power button for about 15 seconds and turn it back on.

option comand escape. You will get a force quit dialog box. While the system still runs. Sometimes relaunching finder helps too. If you get the black screen of death in 20 different languages, a hard restart is your only option.
