Have you ever wondered why the moon is more orange or yellow in color when it first rises at night. This effect is caused by the atmosphere of the earth. The reason for the orange color is due to the scattering of light by the atmosphere. When the moon is near the horizon, the moonlight must pass through much more atmosphere than when the moon is directly overhead. By the time the moonlight reaches your eyes, the blue, green, and purple pieces of visible light have been scattered away by air molecules. That's why you only see yellow, orange, or red.
The moon can have an orange color at any time of the year. Sometimes the moon appears orange even when it's directly overhead. This occurs when there's a lot of dust, smoke, or pollution in the atmosphere. The size of those particles will determine the type of color you will see.

When the moon is low on the horizon, you are looking through a thicker layer of the atmosphere. Water in the atmosphere acts like a lens, causing the moon to appear larger than normal. Suspended Dust and pollutants course the red ting.

The orange or red colour of the Moon is due to a filtering effect caused by particles in the Earth's atmosphere, because it is just reflected light from the Sun and that doesn't change its colour.

It was soooooo cool!

Pollution! Naturally the sky can act as a filter and because of that excesses in pollution often appear reddish in colour. People have actually gone out of their way to record the twilight's that accrue especially after a big Tsunami or Volcano which can display great sensual hues for a few years after the fact!

If it's low in the sky it's probably being filtered through a haze of pollution, hence the colour change. From here in Yorkshire, it looks pretty normal to me.

I think it's to do with light refraction as it enters the atmosphere. Only light from that part of the spectrum gets to us. There is a full explanation in the Bruce Willis movie -The Kid.
