Any ideas on how to install a wooden railing on an outdoor set of steps. There are 3 wooden steps which are unattached to the house and we need to put some kind of railing on them. The railing cannot be attached to the house because of frost heaving and I'm not sure the railing would be secure by just attaching it to the steps. Suggestions?

Dig some post holes in the ground beside the steps... go at least to your frost line, for depth. For most of the country, this is 18" to 24" deep.
Fill the holes with concrete, and level them off at ground level.

I use steel pipe for my railings...1" diameter, and paint them black. use the standard mounting flange, to secure them to the concrete. (Tip -- lay a flange on the wet concrete, to imprint it, then lift it, and push some bolts into the wet concrete, leaving enough of them sticking up, to be able to bolt the flange to them. The concrete will dry around the bolt, and you won't have to drill it out later, to install a bolt)

Then its a simple matter of getting the pipe cut, and threaded. Add the appropriately angled fittings, and youre all set. To make it extra comfy and easy to grip... I take the black foam pipe insulation, and wrap it around the hand rail... and zip tie it in place.

This makes for a good strong hand rail.

If you want to stick with a wooden handrail, put the concrete in the ground as described above, and use a bracket, to mount a post to it. (If you just sink the post in the concrete, you may have problems with it later...by using the mounting bracket, it will make it easy to adjust, or repair later)
Then place your handrail as you like, attached to the two posts.

Have Fun

any time you're paint a metal or slick surface your need to prep and prime even if the iron has been painted and is flat, you should sand it down, and then prime over it. Behr paint at the home depot has an exterior line of paint and primer in one that is great! it saves you money and time since you don't have to wait for the first coat to dry or buy a second can. it should take one coat and then it's done! what ever you decide to do, prep is the most important aspect of painting. if your paint is peeling or rusted or shiny, you must sand and prime. I always recommend primer because it's an adhesive which acts as a clean slate so your new paint bonds and lasts.
