The fastest is the Intel Pentium EXTREME EDITION but few people will own it at about $800 to $1000 each. The Processor is just one part of the computer without fast memory and lots of it and a Fast hard drive. The processor cant do its thing. I have the western digital Raptor 10K rpm which is the fastest SATA. it will give your computer a real increase in speed

the fastest processor today is the amd athlon 64 fx 60 very fast for gaming if you have a thousand bucks. in the 3rd quarter intel will release Conroe e6700 the next gen pentium.

A 3ghz Pentium 4 overclocked to 5.25ghz using liquid nitrogen. Pretty crazy stuff.

p4 3.6 ghz safely overclocked at 4.19 ghz.
Not counting the doubling that sellers display in the dual core processors (ie dual core 2.5 ghz is really 5 ghz etc etc)
