Well when you play international sports you learn to speak many languages in order to communicate with other team members, coaches, trainers, and refs. Zinadane did understand what was being said to him. However, I am not sure what he did was right. Being a power shooter on your team and having yourself red carded right before shoot outs was not the wise choice. On the other hand if you had just found out your mother was deathly ill and a player said they wished your family all died ugly deaths... I could see how that would get a rise out of you.
Either way... he understood what was being said, and took what actions he thought were necessary. The French still adore him, and he has held to his standards.

Well, Zidane could know Italian, then again, Materazzi could know some French. Remember though, French and Italian are romance languages, so they are very similar on some levels, so he could've said the right phrase that Zidane could've picked up on. There's no real way to know.

Most europeans speak multiple languages, and understand even more. As a sportsperson, I suspect Zidane has been cursed in many languages, and has at least enough working italian to recognize the insult.

a bullet sounds the same in every language. Not only that, but French and Italian are both romance languages meaning that they both come from Latin. Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian are very similar. Do a little learning yourself before you go on thinking that people are unable to understand each other.

PEOPLE! When you are a professional football player, you have the opportunity to work with people from all over the world and work in many different countries. Not only do you have to be a good player, but you must learn other languages. It is well known that most players speak fluent Spanish. That is the unofficial language of the FIFA.
