jimi hendrix by far.... he may not of been blindingly fast but with his elongated thumb he came up with some of the most amazing songs ever

ps. i pity the guy who said billie joe armstrong.. i like greenday but seriously, your obviously not aa guitar player.... he plays the same 4 chords over and over.

Also to the guy who said kirk... what??? its a good band but hes not that good a guitarist

Les Paul, for cripes' sake. I interpret "greatest" to not only mean most technically precise and gifted (and Les Paul is much underrated on both counts just because he didn't do drugs as far as we know and he's not Jimi Hendrix), but also "greatest" should include your impact on the world of guitar. In that, Les Paul has no comparison. No one made more of an impact than him, or even came close.

I think there are four guys who you could argue are the best of all time. (in no particular order) Brian May, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton. The last three are all very talented with their own style of rock. What sets Brian May apart from those guys is he is really good at many different styles of music. Listen to what he could do with Red Special (his guitar).

That's a tough one. Many greats from: Slash, Hendrix, Van Halen, Angus Young, Eric Clapton, Santana, Vaughn...

But all in all, I'd have to say.... Jimmy Page.

Led Zepplin revolutionized the music industry.

Looking here, yeah, Ingie Malmsteen or however it's spelled is a really good guitarist, although his singing is horrible.

My favourite guitarist is Mark Knopfler from Dire Straights. Listen to 'Sultans of Swing', amazingly crisp, clean guitar. Might not be everyone's type of music but the talent is definate.
