You should report this to the police as soon as possible, I don't suppose you took a photo of it or got an independant witness ?
It could be that your car is the ringer.

In many states, plates are only unique by county, and the ticketing officer is supposed to write down the plate number and tag-county. This is most often an issue with vanity plates, but as some states are starting to run out of plate-numbers, it's not unexpected.

Quite easily I guess all they have to do is get a plate made up obviously from some one dodgy. My number plate came up in a ram raid different car but same number plate it happens I had nothing to do with it, and I hope the police caught the real criminals but I doubt it.

they are supposed to be unique, but like with everything that has a lot of paper stuff to be filled out and send to wherever and so on, it's very possible that sometimes something falls through the cracks and as a result there a two cars with the same plates. kind of rare but it happens.
heard about it in germany as well =)

Wow, this should not be legal anywhere in the US or in Europe!
I would suggest, definitely check with your local Police Department and find out what the heck is going on!

that is illegal, and fraud!! it could have been the car dealership tax dodging, or it could be the car owner,so that they don't get caught speeding etc. but either way it is wrong and you should report it to the police and insist they look into it for you! :) good luck

it's called cloning.
It's very common, court will not believe you unless you have police evidence to prove it, and / or time relevant data that you were elsewhere eg. till reciets from your credit card, cctv footage ,too many people try to get out of files with it.
Anybody can get any numberplate made up - just use ebay, or a dodgy sign shop.
