There are many laptops that are good for the college. However, note that my education around the world is going into e-learning and schools gives out digital notes instead of paper ones. Some schools even request their students to submit their work on-line. In that aspect, consider Tablet PCs. There are those in the market that looks like a laptop but with a swivel hinge in the center. You can turn the screen around and it becomes a Tablet. The main disavantage is weight though.
But if you want to be the coolest kid in school (and pick up girls or be picked up), check out the slate Tablet PC. They do not come with a keyboard attached and looks like a electronic clipboard. The coolest of the lot must be Motion Computing, I think.

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market,
the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online.
these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half.
one such website for laptop computers is :

If you can afford one it is very useful. I hate needing to wait at the college computer labs.

Get a Mac. They can run Windows and OS X, so you can still use your software on a better computer.
