The spec says “5.4 U.S. gallons; including 1 gallon reserve” but I’ve been told by the shop that far from all of the 5.4 gallons are available on a US model. The reason should be environmental changes made to the US models. Do you know how much is available and how much of it is the reserve. Thanks in advance!!

On at least on the R1150R there is no reserve per se. The "reserve" start when the light goes on. The reason I ask this is because the US model of the gas tank is different than the original. The US model has a catalyst installed which make the space for gas smaller. The top of the tank also has some environmentally thing installed. The tank measurements given by BMW for this bike does not reflect these modifications. I know people out there have removed these additions in order to be able to carry more gas. So back t the original question: How large is the tank on a US model (2004)? Again, thanks in advance.

Just pay attention at the gas pump. fill your tank up ride it until the light comes on then find the nearest pump and refill that will give you how much your tank holds and if you are a smart rider you will never ride very far into your reserve. My 01 Volusia Intruder VL800 has a 4.5 Gal tank and I rarely put more than 4 gals in at a time Usually I get to a gas pump prior to that But I know when I hit the 140 mile mark I had better be getting Gas

you may have to switch manually to reserve? there will always be a small amount of gas the fuel pump cant pick up but its probably about a pint or so
