Try holding the paper up to a bright light and try to read through it. Have the white-outed side facing the light. That has worked for me before

here are some ideas:
1) hold it up to the light --it should be clearly visible
2) try putting tracing paper over it and use a pencil to shade it, like you would make a rubbing
3) use www.switchboard.com
4)scratch with fingernail

Don't use chemicals until you've tried the above, I'm worried that you will dissolve the phone number too -- as a last resort, try nail polish remover or liquid paper remover (I think they still sell it.)

yup, that's right, hold up the paper toward the light and look through the back, you'll be able to see the number in reverse. jot it down on another paper and keep that one away from white out!

Look through the back of the paper aginst your brightest light in your house, and if you didn't write it with pencil, then kinda scratch it off.(if it rips...sorry! T_T)

Use an x-acto knife and carefully scrape it off at a 20 degree angle

Hold it up to a light and look at the bottom of it, or scratch it off.

White out don't you mean wipe out??? I do hope that you find the number somewhere else that you left it or at the very least bump into them again soon
