Where was the mountain scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind filmed?

I know it is supposed to be Devil's Tower, but it seems more like a rock I saw in Bernal, Mexico.

The mountain you see in the movie "Close Encounters...."
is indeed Devils Tower, Wyoming.

And yes, there are similarities in their form which might allow one to confuse the Pena of Bernal with Devil's Tower.

Mythology:
In Kiowa Indian mythology it was said that: Once upon a time seven little girls were playing in the woods far from home and they came upon some bears that chased after them. They found refuge on a great rock, that rose into sky with them on it, making them into stars. The bears tried to pursue them, but all their efforts were in vain. You can still see the struggle and their claw marks in the rock that makes up Devil's Tower.

Bernal, Mexico:
The Pena of Bernal dominates this small town outside of Queretaro. It's an awe inspiring rock, rising straight out of the ground for almost 2,000 feet.
