The engagement ring.... the history behind it stems long ago during times when business contracts between families were negotiated through consideration usually through dowery or an item whether money, land, or ox were given in exchange in making a marriage (business arrangement during those times; still is for millions today even in America) final between two families. During ancient Hebrew times I believe the conveyance for consideration was a coin, mind you the cheapest coin available at the time, that was used to denote the union or future union of two families. Many cultures use some sort of symbology in various forms to exhibit their contract. Over time rings were used and hence we are today with the most expensive way to explain our feelings for each other in a portable way and worn over the finger in which the vein leads to the heart (literally). This is a general summary. Hope you get the idea though. I do agree. I think in this liberal and open society we live in now the guys deserve a ring too and hey.... its not uncommon to hear of girls lately proposing to guys. SERIOUSLY! Well hope this helps.

The ring is meant to keep potential suitors away. Since men traditionally pursue women (not the other way around), a ring on the woman's finger makes sense. But putting a ring on the guy doesnt, since women arent going to pursue a guy. Because he is engaged, he wont pursue other women.

from what i heard it was for us to wear an engagement ring so that other men would know to stay away from us, not to cross that line, cause see back then when a guy would ask you to marry him that meant that he wants you and makes it known to others that he is taken but that a lady has to wear hers so that a man would not even think of flirting with her at the sight of that ring. i guess back then it was ok for ladies to flirt with an ingaged man cause they would let them know that they are taken and that would be the end of it. i guess it is just a woman thing? my husband could not aford at the time to get me an engagement ring and wedding ring, so i wore my wedding ring as my engagement ring and then took it off when we got married and put it back on durring the ceremony, he wore his before he was married too.
