your question is similar to "why do people sometimes have easier time talking to strangers on airplanes etc than friends and family". i think the reason is because sometimes being close to someone comes with being a part of the problem and thus your perspective on it is clouded by your subjectivity and you being involved in it. a little perspective from non involved parties can do wonders

Good question, but the reason why so many people like your self do this is because when you ask a question on the web your peers are not in your face telling you how much of a loser they think you are for asking such dump questions. Plus you get multiple views regarding your situation.

I suppose some people are too embarrassed to ask personal questions with close ones, especially around health and well - being, maybe they don't want them to worry. As with other questions asked on here well I think some people have to much time on their hands. (I just mean the really meaningless questions btw)

Sometimes it is embarrassing to ask someone you know. The anonymity here helps. In some case, people might have experienced similar situations and can help.

Sometimes asking certain people certain questions can create new problems. I know that when I talk about something with strangers online, it often helps prepare me for the real-life interactions I'm dreading.

Sometimes you just need an 'objective ear' - someone who is not close to you. Friends and family sometimes tend to tell you what they think you WANT to hear. Total strangers will be in your face and tell you what you should hear.

It's a lot easier to ask total strangers questions anonymously, rather than ask someone close and risk their disappointment or rejection.
That's my guess, anyway.

Some things are embarrassing and or they might hurt your friends - its much better to be anonymous & you get a wider range of opinions...
