Average hours of studying? I think for biology it's about 1.5X more outside.
ie. For every hour you spend in class you have to study for at least a hour and a half outside.
15 credits is about 15 hours of class per week, but many courses (especially science ones) come with labs and tutorials, that's about 2-3 hours.

I majored in International Studies with a minor in Latin American Studies at Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. I took an average of 16 credit hours per semester, and the homework usually depended on how many credit hours the class was. For most 3 credit hour classes, I did about 5-6 hours of homework a week. My GPA was 3.73, so I didn't do too bad. Some classes and majors were harder, of course, and required more time. My poor friends in the science majors averaged like 20 hours of homework a week or more. Yuck.
15 credits = 15 hours in class is about right. My 3 credit classes met 3 times a week for 50 minutes, my 1 credit class met once a week for 1 hour, and my 2 credit classes met 2 times a week.
College was great - I really liked being able to manage my own schedule and I made a lot of friends. Good luck!

I went to college in Missouri. Where I attended, we were told that we needed to spend at least 3 hours a night per course studying/doing assigments. In some courses with lots of reading, plan on devoting 4-5 hours a night to read and complete any work.
If you take 15 credit hours, you'll spend about 15 hours a week in class; typically a 3 credit hour course will meet for 50 minutes three days a week, or 1 hour 20 minutes two days a week.

This isn't universal, but I was told double your credit hours, thats how much out of class room work you can expect. 10 hours in-class turns into 20 hours out of class.
