The use of marijuana is not the problem but the consquences stemming from it. Many youngsters drink wine coolers (often permitted by their own parents) but does it lead to beer and then whiskey? As with many drugs, we develop a tolerance and then require something stronger to give us the same satisfaction. However in some cultures where hashish has been used for centuries, it seems that the use has declined. With the criminal elements controlling the smuggling and reaping vast wealth, it would seem that we could defuse crime and elimanate a lot of our problems by both legalizing and regulating the drug. We have far too many good people stigamatized by their recreational use of marijuana and the courts are flooded, consequentially some companies have mandatory drug testing and thereby violate one's privacy. Other countries have legalized marijuana for recreational use and others for medical use and the crime rate has not soared. Some will say that allowing adults to use marijuana will simply be a short-cut for youngsters to get the drug but if we can't control teen-age smokers of cigarettes, how could we prevent that? Besides youngsters probably have better sources than adults anyways. My thoughts are these: remove the restrictions and elimanate crime, allow some large companies to both package and stabilize the prices, have the same guidelines for the use of alcohol and driving, operating machinery and such. I have never inhaled, but then I never used the drug but I do think a little euphoria might make life a little easier for many.

I think people should be able to smoke marijuana legally no matter where they are, but it will not happen in the forseeable future.

The government has been touting the war on drugs for decades now, and legalizing anything would basically be an admission of defeat.

In my opinion, the laws regarding drugs like marijuana have a lot in common with the laws on alcohol during prohibition. They basically have no effect other than putting average people in prison and making criminals rich.

Sure. The trick is how does one obtain it?

It should be legalized, taxed out the wazoo, and regulated even more tightly than alcohol.

We could do a lot with the billions in revenue, dealers and associated crime would be gone, and Twinky sales would skyrocket. We'd even get more DUI revenue.

10% of the people are going to use it anyway, regardless of the law. Leverage it and do something positive with it. Kids wouldn't have as easy access to it. Their folks would know if the stash was pinched.

PS. Buy Twinky stock if it looks likely pot will go legal. It will happen eventually.

This is something i wrote on this topic previously:

While the headlines are filled with news of the fighting in Iraq a separate war is being quietly fought right here on our own soil. It’s a war that’s been going on for over 30 years now with very little, if any progress. Billions and billions of dollars are being spent each year on this war leading to nearly 1.7 million arrests. Of those 1.7 million nearly 50% are for marijuana, most for simple possession. Meanwhile a couple of legal drugs, alcohol & tobacco remain as two of the leading causes of death in America. So, the question is…Is it socially responsible to spend all this money and make all of these arrest for a drug like marijuana when two of the leading killers in the U.S. are available on every corner? Well let’s compare some numbers from 2004 to get our answer.

Deaths in motor vehicle crashes………………….16,694 alcohol related
Injuries in motor vehicle crashes………………….248,000 alcohol related
Murders……………………………………………50% alcohol related
Firearm related deaths……………………………..43% alcohol related
Domestic abuse…………………………………….57% alcohol related
"Suiciders"…………………………………………….50% alcohol related
Residential Fire Deaths.................................43% alcohol related

And the list could go on & on; drunk boaters, swimmers, college kids & alcohol poisoning, rapes, armed robbery, homelessness, broken homes, dreams, & careers.

After getting all of those numbers I researched the same topics but for a correlation with Marijuana rather than alcohol. Know what I found...nothing. Nothing at all except for the overwhelming number of people who are arrested for it.

Tobbaco, the #1 killer claimed 442,398 lives in 2004 alone. NEARLY A HALF A ****** MILLION PEOPLE A YEAR!!!

And despite all of these lives lost or ruined we do nothing...But in the case of Marijuana with it's most harmful effect being an unsatisfiable desire for candy we label approximately 750,000 people a year with a permanent criminal record.

I think it should absolutely be legal to smoke marijuana. It is a personal choice! As Americans. we don't have half the rights or freedoms you'd think!

If we could trust these people to be careful and not do anything stupid then yes, but unfortunately marijuana clouds judgement and reason and people would do stupid things like drive, or commit criminal acts. I would not want any of that on my mind, nor would I want some pothead to lose control of his car and kill/injure any member of my family. Keep it illegal.

I think that if you let them have it in their home than they will have it elsewhere. A little bit of freedom will demand a lot of freedom. Then again, what's to stop them from having marijuana in their home illegally now?

From the looks of the last time you asked this, you aren't waiting for it to be legal.

Why not? They can do all other kinds of immoral things at home legally - why should drugs be any different?
