Most medical experts agree that circumcision is not medically necessary. Worldwide, most men are not circumcised at birth except for the U.S., Korea and the Philippines (which had huge U.S. cultural impact in the past), and Muslim and Jewish-majority countries. Regardless, the numbers are going down as people become more aware of the risks of complication, the fact that medical insurance generally does not cover it for cosmetic reasons, and that the practice in America is based on myth and tradition. However, scientists have recently discovered that circumcising all the men in Africa will reduce the number of AIDS related deaths by over 2 million.

So if and when you have a son, will you choose to have him circumcised or not, and why?

If I had a son I wouldn't. Mainly because I feel like it's not my decision to change something that's irreversible. He may like it, he may not; and if not, then I don't want to deal with the regret. But I've never had any problems with mine being uncut, and I think as long as one keeps clean then 95% of the time there should be no problem.

Besides, the thought of doing that to a baby seems unbelievably cruel - I mean, why should one of the first things a person feels is pain, especially in such an area?

I didn't get my son circumcised because of the pain and because I didn't feel that it was right for me to take off a piece of skin that is on his body.

There have been some problems. He has had monir infections and it is hard to retract the foreskin. I am a single parent and I have had to treat the infections. I don't know whether it is a good idea for a mother to have to handle her son's penis even for medical reasons. There doesn't seem to be any lasting problems. He is straight and looking forward to having a girlfriend.

I have 2 boys and had them both circumcised.. I am a nurse and have witnessed first hand the dangers of foreskin related infections. I believe that it is a safer practice and easier for men to keep this area clean when there is no foreskin.. I can see why the AIDS related deaths would drop as this is a source of infection and AIDS effects the immune system. This will not, however, prevent the spread of AIDS unless they use a condom. Thanks for the question and I hope I helped you with an answer to compare to.

There are a lot of good reasons for men to be circumcised! Health, hygiene and sex.

I had my sons circumcised after my youngest brother had tons of problems with his foreskin and needed to be circumcised! I really think the risk caused by foreskin is really underestimated. Given my sons' reactions circumcision seems pretty easy and quick by comparision.

It is much easier on a baby and its a good preventative step to future problems!

Lots of love,

Had two boys both circumsized, less risk of infections. Easier to care for as infants and little boys. It's enough of a hassel being a first time mom and even after the second one I still wouldn't want that chore.

I have three boys, none were circumcised at birth. One had phimosis [the foreskin wouldn't retract] and was circumcised at age 3 the other two still have their foreskin and have had no problems.

I was partially cut as an infant and chose to have the total circ as an adult. I would certainly have my sons cut based on my experience of being "uncut" and cut.

My son is ten, and we chose not to mutilate him...( even though it was done to me). I can't believe that so many people still do it just so their son can look like Dad...( the stupidest reason ever)

Definitely! I think an uncircumcised penis is hideous. More prone to infections, and easier to keep clean.

Any of you other women had the unpleasant experience of smelling an unhygenic, uncircumcised penis? Very unpleasant!
