I am in the process of looking for a used BMW 3-series (all-wheel drive). I am wondering whether to get a stick or an automatic. Have any of you have good or bad experiences with either? is reliability better or worse with one or the other? Is the stick smooth and precise? Thanks a million!

go with the stick because of better gas mileage and also its a lot more fun to drive! the all wheel drive uses about 15-20% more gas than just a regular 330i! Manual transmission is better and cheaper to work on if anything does go wrong with it! I would see if the previous owner/s took care o it also. look at the warranty left on it too! good luck and Have fun with The Ultimate Driving Machine! Be warned though when you get a BMW you never get anything else! which is a good thing!!! :)

I have been a BMW owner for over ten years. In that time my wife and i have owned an M3, MRoadster, and a new 535i. The M versions are 3-series platforms, and both were stick. They were a blast to drive. We still have the '98 MRoadster and it's running and looking great.

The 535i is a larger car. We got it with the automatic. The transmission is set up so we can "shift" it, but it's not as fun.

The only downside to a stick is having to use the clutch often in stop-and-go traffic. A small price to pay for a much higher fun factor.

Enjoy!

IT is a specail fluid from TERXACO or PENTOSIN that NOBODY else will have In the Detroi area we ahve a foreign car parts store that carries the right stuff. It is a synthetic VEGETABLE oil usualy and do NOT add anything. GO to the BMW dealership when you can and keep ONE bottle of it handy. You will probably nevver need it, and most h BMW "ZF" trannies have NO fill holes, but a SERVICE port under the car. The TRANS fludi chould be changed aloing wiht the filter every 100k miles and usign ONLY the BMW flush adn fill procedure NOTHING ELSE> there si a REASON for you to use the dealership, THEY KNOW these cars. Only LONGLIFE SYNTHETIC engien oil may be used in there, as well. NO VALVOLINE or wax based engine oil EVER! MOBIL ONE 0W_40 or other EUORPEAN oil. GOO DLUCK!

I just purchased a new 06 330CI convertible with the high performance pkg. My sales associate reccomended I get the automatic because most of my driving would be city and it's more comfortable but now I really wish i had ordered the manual. The manual tranny just provides a higher level of performance.

I drive a 330 ci, manual.
I had to special order the manual when I bought the car. Manual is always the better choice in terms of mechanical reliability.

manual transmissions are more durable and are less likely to go out on you than an automatic transmission.
