Try cleaning the inside with a low power vacuum cleaner to remove built up fluff which impairs heat extraction from the components. Also recommend you replace the CPU fan. If ths is happening due to the current heat wave, suggets you monitor the room temperature and remove any sources of additional heat around your computer or items that could be blocking free circulation of air from the fan (this may not be a problem in cooler months but can cause problems in the summer)
If all else fails--and its not the heat.. check for viruses and update your anti virus software.

if it over heats when on a hard surface like a table I guess the fan
has died. Laptops will over heat if used on a bed or carpet type of soft surface
The fan is usually on one side at the back you will see a hole with a grille covering the fan, often will run for a short time after starting pc and then when required in use
You might have a utility program on the pc that will monitor the temp.
Should be an easy fix for your local computer store or a handy friend with a screw driver

Sounds like the fan is not working properly. Should be easy enough to replace. Failing that, place it in a well-ventillated area with plenty of air-flow around it, or buy an external fan and use it to blow cool air over it.

buy a better quality laptop such as proper Hewlett Packard.. they are better engineered and tend to be much more reliable when used for long periods.. Packard Bell and Dell use the cheapest of the cheap and I'm afraid you really do get what you pay for!!

Definitely check the fan, but if you have a fan that's fine, try undervolting the processor. It should extend your battery life as well as keep the processor much cooler.

Buy a laptop cooler:

only $15... I am getting one tonight at Circuit City or Best Buy if I have time. :) It's too hot here in general not to have one. :)
