When I went in for my 27 week exam I was diagnosed with strep b. I was told that I have to have penicillin going through me once my water breaks. I am scared to death.

When diagnosed early Strep B is rarely dangerous. When your water breaks---don't waste any time hit the hospital and insist the antibiotics be started NOW! If your water is broken for a while just have a c-section. Prolonged exposure can lead to fetal death--I know it's scary but learn all you can and ask your dr. any questions you have--your baby's health is your responsibility.

This is nothing to be worried about - yes you will have an IV when you deliver - but that is for the baby's safety. Many women have group B strep and have perfectly normal vaginal deliveries - and no complications for the baby either!

Group B strep is found mostly in the lower intestine, but sometimes it may be found during the test your doctor gave you - most doctors will do a vaginal and a rectal swab just to be safe -- in case of tearing or episiotomy during labor -- you are fine - don't be worried!

Best wishes!

Well...You really don't need the meds anyways....hospitals do it for liability...are you delivering in a hospital? I think that there is some info on

MilkShare.com....if you can't find anything, there is an e-mail address on there, e-mail her....she is fantastic!! She will tell you the ins and outs of everything!! There is NO reason to have an IV line hooked up to you....NO reason!!!!

I had that too with my first child. It's nothing to worry about. They give you meds while in labor to prevent the baby from catching anything on the way out. I was told that it can get into their eyes and mouth and cause problems so they put you on meds so the baby won't get anything. Don't worry. Good luck
