ask them, if they don't tell you it's none of your business

Some lesbians and gay men are easier to spot than others. "Gaydar" is used to determine whether a person can fall into the gay category. There are many characteristics associated with a gay man and a lesbian that can be identified just by looking at them. However, as I said, not all gay people can be spotted just by appearance and/or body language.

The most extreme lesbian, or a "bull dyke" will greatly resemble a male. They often wear men's clothing, strut like men, have very short, boyish hair cuts, and carry themselves in an otherwise masculine manner. Often, it is difficult to tell if they are a man or a woman! These are the easiest to identify. At the other end of the spectrum, the "lipstick lesbian" is very feminine, and to look at her, most people would automatically assume she is straight. These women are often over-looked as possibly being gay. Of course, many lesbians fall "in between" where they aren't altogether masculine, but they don't necessarily favor traditional feminine traits, either. In fact, "tweeners" can do one thing that would seem masculine one moment, but the next, they may be completely feminine. I indentify more with the "in between" lesbians.

I have little experience with gay men, but I imagine it to be quite similar to women. There is the man whose body language is very feminine, at the other end, the completely macho man who no one would ever guess is gay, and then the man who might have gay characteristics, but you can't be sure if he is just by observing.

I hope this has been of some help.

I'm a straight male.

With heterophobic women, it's harder to tell sometimes. However, very shortly cropped hair and an angry look in her eyes normally gets my inner voice saying "dyke". Tatoos help.

In heterophobic men, it's that ***** accent that all gay men get for some reason.

I am female. I am sure there are presumptions based on the way someone dresses, does their hair, has a high voice, or other external factors.

I don't think you can "know" unless the other person tells you. It is presumptious to ask them.
