Well, let's just review the answers suggesting gay people should be treated differently, and see if we can't illuminate matters a bit, shall we?
lady:
"coz they are abnormal and abnormal ppl desrve abnormal treatment"
Well, at least she's honest about what she thinks. Of course, let's just cover what that would really mean for a bit. Epileptics are abnormal. It isn't normal for humans to have epilepsy. We might as well just suggest they're abnormal and treat them that way. Every bit of prejudice leveled against them by others is obviously something they deserve. What about infertile people? They're also abnormal. Sure, they deserve to be treated abnormally, too. Caring, patience, and understanding... those are things normal people deserve, not some abnormal barren abomination that God has chosen to punish by robbing of the right to have children.
And what about all those people born with deformed limbs? There's some fertile ground for abnormal humans. We're not supposed to be deformed. I say stop holding those babies immediately, chain them to a crib, and only walk by long enough to hurl live chickens and fish heads at them for sustenance and maybe pop in to beat them occasionally. We are supposed to be treating abnormal people abnormally, right?
Then again, maybe it's abnormal to think you should be entitled to treat people like crap for being different than you because it proves you're missing several pieces of your heart.
I rock ur sox:
"if you have a kid it is not right they will grow up to be gay they will fell that that is the right thing to do and that is not"
Wow... I have no idea what this even means, except that it might not be a good idea to post on a forum if you lack necessary skills, such as grammar and the ability to spell four letter words, to do so. It also makes me think it's a good idea to encourage people to master being able to put a thought together in their head before they announce it to the world.
Rockford:
"Do you mean like two gay brothers who want to get married"
Okay, barring the fact the dude forgot a question mark, no obviously you didn't mean anything of the sort since that's not the question you asked, but I think we have part of the answer here. Apparently, a lot of people like to make sure we know gay people can't simply want to meet another person and fall in love and just live their lives in peace. They have to pick every other taboo to break at the same time, no matter how much they don't want to marry a sibling or hate the company of sheep.
I have to wonder about the people who, immediately upon hearing about gay people, start thinking "sex with family members, sex with children, sex with animals" and wonder just what creepy, vomit inducing images run through their minds when they masturbate.
Dr. L:
"Because Gay people engage in perversion that is an admonition to God. This behavior is their choice of lifestyle so they have to live with the consequences. I wouldn't treat a homosexual different, and wouldn't change rules to accommodate them either (aka marriage)."
That's right, gay people! Admonish God! Admonish him good! Make sure he's thoroughly berated by the time you're done with them! Punish him with your gay behavior!
Of course, what do you expect from someone who thinks denying others the right to marry, the right to commit themselves to each other, any of the legal rights to make decisions about each other's lives, and criminalizing what goes on in their bedroom so they can be imprisoned, is treating them just the same as everyone else?
LovelyEmily:
"Being gay is unnatural so why do you deserve natural treatment? God made Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve. Being gay is a sin, don't let them fool you into thinking its not."
Well, I'm glad we have that straightened out. It's nice to know God didn't create Steve. Now I don't have to remember that "whatsoever you do to the least of my creatures" line and can treat him as bad as I want.
I believe this goes back to "abnormal people deserve abnormal treatment", and will note that most people seem to have a sense of compassion, so perhaps we should be casting a much more cautious and wary eye toward those who act like they're missing it.
whynotaskdon:
"case in point-- marriage by two gays.
ALL religions are against it.
The Governments have been against it.
Popular opinion has been Against it.
etc. etc. etc.
But the Homosexual Society is for it and DEMAND IT.
If and when granted - is that getting treated like anyone else?? NO WAY BABBY-- THAT'S SPECIAL PRIVILEGE! "
Of course, all religions are against it. That's why we have all those churches in America accepting gay members in the laity and even the clergy. That's why there are churches backing gay marriage just like there are churches opposing it. That's why the largest organization of Jewish Synagogues in the United States supports allowing gay people to marry. That's why the Dalai Lama, one of the most important spiritual leaders on Earth and pretty much unquestioned leader of Buddhism, openly supports and advocates it.
And the governments. Well, Canada allows it, the Netherlands allows it, Belgium allows it, France and Germany both allow civil unions, Britain is working on allowing it, and South Africa actually placed gay rights in its constitution once they ended apartheid and sat down to form a modern government.
It seems in quite a few places it's allowed, but then... those countries aren't the United States, so you have to remember they don't really exist or have valid governments unless they do what we tell them to.
As for popular opinion, let's explore some of the other things it's supported. Black people were slaves because it was popular. Women were property because it was popular. The Nazi movement was actually a popular movement. Hitler was democratically elected. He didn't take over in a military coup.
Popular opinion isn't always the best gauge of right and wrong.
As for special privilege, that I'll freely grant. Gay people want the special privilege to hold each other's hands without being ridiculed or beaten to death. They want the special privilege to love who their hearts lead them to love, and commit to them. They want the special privilege to live their lives with one another in peace, with the same basic respect and rights given to them everyone else has...
Or, in short, they want the same special privileges straight people demand be given to them.
I think we've stumbled onto the answer to another question in the search for the answer to the one posed.
Why not ask Don? Because Don doesn't seem to know what he's talking about.
morgy:
"I think we should be allowed to marry animals too...and our cars..and fridges...and our own clones...and...no..see human nature..has a male and a female...i'm not talking politics..just simple nature...male and female...binary..we are all binary..IOIOIOIOIOIOIOIOIOIOIO... IIIIII or OOOOOOO...its ok to get buddy blows...or sexy carpet munchers..but its not okay to bind people together just because they like the same sex....its not fair for the children that will think and learn it..and perhaps act it out...male and female...simple natural...not religous..not politica...simple nature..."
I'm...having...trouble...with how...this...guy writes and... the fact... he thinks... he should... get... to have... other... guys... suck his... dick... as... long... as they... don't... have... the right... to... walk away... with... anything... but... a face... full of... goo.
How do you issue a valid response to something so poorly reasoned out and written? Well, how about this? In a binary world of ones and zeroes, you've most definitely demonstrated you're the latter.
Homosexuality occurs all across the world, no matter how liberal or conservative the society is, and in the same frequency, whether or not homosexuals are allowed to live in peace or are tortured and executed for it. Apparently people continue to be gay even if you don't teach them how.
GeorgieGirl:
"I am so tired of the gay questions that I am going to give my point of view. How many males in nature do you see breeding? Just humans right. How about the bird population, Does the male breed the male, no, only humans do that. No where else in nature do you see male breeding male or female breeding female except the human. Somethings wrong with people, don't you think. It has nothing to do with spirituality just reproduction. If the whole world became homosexual then it wouldn't take long and humans wouldn't exist. Maybe that would give this poor old world a reprieve from the agony it is in."
First, let me note how many fewer plants and animals would be in the world if males weren't breeding in other species.
Interesting, thought, that in trying to demonstrate only humans are gay she brings up birds first considering all the stories which have been in the news on gay penguins. Homosexuality isn't a human phenomenon. It exists in the natural world as well, especially in primates.
If you want a couple of articles on the subject, about five seconds worth of thought and research on my part found these:
http://www.salon.com/it/feature/1999/03/cov_15featurea.html
http://www.seedmagazine.com/news/2006/06/the_gay_animal_kingdom.php?page=all&p=y
http://rainbowallianceopenfaith.homestead.com/Science3.html
http://www.sciencenews.org/pages/sn_arc97/1_4_97/bob1.htm
Well, gosh, I could keep going and while not all the data on the subject or analysis seems scientific, it is very hard to escape the fact that for better or worse, the fact of the matter is not that humans are the only animals that are gay, but that they're the only ones who seem to think it really matters.
The rest of the natural world seems to get on just fine without making a fuss over the part of it that's gay.
shy_angeleyes01:
"Marriage should not be Redefined to accomodate one special group. GAY use to mean Happy Now somehow it's been redefined to mena Homosexual. Marrage has ALWAYS been between a man and a Woman Not 2 men or two girls or two girls and one guy. If you wanna be with your partner coolio but, call it something other than Marrage that words allready Spoken for and doesn't need redefined."
Really? Always? I seem to recall the Bible allows a man to have as many wives as he wants. In fact, King David had someone else's husband killed so he could take her as his wife. I believe she was #6.
The Koran says a man may take up to four.
Native American societies, before Europeans arrived, had no problem with two members of the same sex marrying. It was actually fashionable for the Samurai in feudal Japan to take a young boy playing the role of geisha instead of a woman for their marriage.
The Sulawesi of Africa, like the Native Americans, allowed for a "third sex" and marriage between two people of the same sex as long as social roles were fulfilled.
It would seem what "marriage" means changes over the course of time and has meant many things in reality... so, while in modern America it may refer to a union only allowed to a single male and female, it has certainly not "always" done so, unless of course you're redefining "always" to mean "since as long as it was the way I want it".
* * *
So, at last I come to answering the question posed. Why can't gay people get treated like everyone else?
Well, we have people insisting no religions support it when many obviously do, that governments and people don't support it when many obviously do... we have others saying only people do it when animals do it, too. We have people insisting the natural world would come crashing down if homosexuality was normal, when obviously it has no problem living with it, and people insisting society would come crashing down when it's never done any such thing.
We have people insisting gay people are only interested in casual sex and lust, and then wailing about the unfairness of gay people wanting to love and commit to one another. We have people screaming about how different gay people demand on being, then crying foul about gay people wanting to be treated just the same.
So, I think my answer to the question is gay people can't get treated like everyone else because, as the answers given to your question reveal quite thoroughly, many people feel entitled to be judge others and claim to be experts when they don't know what they're talking about, and they also feel entitled to believing the truth is based on what they do and don't like, without wanting to be pestered by such annoying things as facts and the reality of the situation.

The problem started a long time ago, when the government started giving tax breaks to married couples.
The whole problem is one of language. When a straight couple gets married in a church, they also sign a marriage license, so they are also entering into what is called a "civil marriage."
If the government had used the phrase "civil union" instead, from the get-go, none of this mess would be happening today.
Straight people would get married in church, and sign papers forming a government-backed civil union.
Gay people (and straight people not interested in the church part) would get a government-backed civil union only.
I think you'll find that most people's biggest objection to "gay marriage" is the use of the word "marriage." Changing the term without changing the legal definition takes a lot of the emotional fire out of it for many people, and they are more likely to go along with it.
Of course, you have the REALLY religious people who are against ANY sort of ANYTHING for gay people, and so, since marriage is the issue of the day, they are against that. When some other aspect of gay rights comes up, these people will automatically be against that too, whatever it is.
They will make any argument they can think of to keep gay people from getting any rights at all, including the slippery slope of marrying my sister/my dog/the toaster, and the claim that gay marriage will hurt their marriage (though they can never explain how).
But these and many others have all been quickly and intelligently overcome from a legal perspective. All that is left are two "real" reasons why anti-gay people think gay people should not get married:
1. I think gay people are icky, and icky people don't deserve rights!
2. My Bible said gay people are icky, and even though we don't live in a theocracy, my Bible should trump the Constitution!
Those are the only two real reasons/excuses to ban gay marriage. Everything else they put forward is just a smokescreen to distract from these "real" reasons that they know will not hold up in a court of law.
Politicians are torn over the issue because, yes, some of them are very religious, but more to the point, some of them are more interested in staying in office than they are in making constitutional laws.... and there are more Christian voters than gay voters, if you know what I mean.

Because people are afraid of what they do not understand and what they refuse to tolerate. Case in point, the first two responses.
Children don't grow up to be gay if they are around gay people and gay people aren't abnormal. These two people just don't have the ability to see people as people. If they are a little different then they must be non human. Gay people bleed red, and love, and all the other stuff that everyone else does. Now if they bled green blood I would consider that abnormal for a human being.

Lets take away religion for a minute.. what makes being gay wrong? Homosexuality has been practiced for centuries.. and sometimes.. people's lives depended on it. The Spartans and The Trojans practiced it.. many other warriors around the world practiced it. People have been gay forever.. it was out in the open and accepted.. then it was wrong.. now it's accepted again.

No because people will always mask their fears in ethics or morals based upon their own agenda. Why do people consider marriage to be sacred and honorable and treat it with contempt. If heterosexuals don't want gays to be able to marry; then they should not be allowed to hide behind the cloak of marriage while committing such atrocities such as: sex outside their marriage; abortions; abandoning and not raising any child born out of their infidelity. They should be denied divorce until their children are adults. What aren't these suppose to be moral and ethical concepts? Don't dictate policy unless you are willing to live up to the same standards stressed upon others.

The whole gay marriage issue is a political ploy the Republicans are using to distract the American voters from other issues. There was no way that a ban on gay marriage was actually going to pass.

Because people think that is they treat gay people differently/ unfairly that it will make people not want to be gay and then gay people will no longer exist. But People are stupid, because even where gay people are killed for being gay, you will still find homosexuals. Though they are in the closet.

Gay marriage isn't the norm. At certain times in history it was accepted to marry the same sex especially for emperors. Though out history same-sex relationships became outlawed and thought of as being unacceptable, for various reasons. Now we can see that loving someone of the same-sex shouldn't be reason to condemn it.We as a society should not be able to say who one should or should not marry. Love is free no one has to pay for it so why can't everyone love whom they want???

Well for starters you can say that most are Ignorant. ( some of your answers on here are pure ignorance.) Kids brought up in gay homes aren't going to be gay themselves. If anything they are going to be smart for learning about this early on.
Gay Marriage: I don't have a clear comment for this. I am gay myself and fight everyday for this to happen in my city. Get Bush out. That's the solution.
