What could be causing my cruise control to automatically come on in my car? We did have a real bad thunderstorm today when I was at work and it happened on my way home. The cruise control light comes on and then the gas pedal goes down on it's own. The car will stop when I brake. I am going to get it looked at tomorrow, but wondering what the possibilities could be? And if you have ideas, about how much to fix if that were the problem?

They will probably want to look at one of two things - your throttle cable, and the relay that activates your cruise control.

There might be a permanent off switch for your cruise control, but you are doing the right thing by getting it checked out.

It sounds like a bad or shorted cruise control switch. That would cause it to turn on and try to accelerate. The system is working properly by shutting off when you hit the brake. Shouldnt be too expensive.

I once knew a guy who was diagnosing "cruise control inop" on a cadillac with the 425 cubic inch motor. What the problem was the cruise control would try to come on and go 90 sitting at a stoplight. Only noone told him... and he almost drove through a car in front of him while standing up on the brake. He wasnt too happy with his service advisor.

Anyhow, good luck!

Sounds like something is bad with the wiring. I would definetly have a mechanic look at it asap because that sounds like a dangerous problem to have.
