Go to the Start Menu and hit the RUN entry and type in MSCONFIG. From there check the last 2 tabs to the right, Services and Startup. On the Startup menu, Hide all Microsoft Entries and just start unchecking items in both menus. If you accidentally uncheck something you need, just go back to the menu and re-enable it. I would do it a few at a time to make sure you haven't cut off anything vital and you know where to go back to if you have a problem.

Also check the Startup folder in the Start Menu-Programs area and delete any icons in that folder that you don't want starting up as well.

Several spyware programs will allow you to configure this...

Spybot, hijackthis, and windows defender are a start... All have the option to view and change the startup config.

A simpler way is to use MSCONFIG... (Just click START, RUN, and type MSCONFIG) and deselect programs you wish NOT to run.)
