Why not a fall color or (my favorite right now) a rich, juicy berry color. Black is safe chic, which is why so many women are opting for it now, for weddings, funerals, etc.

I have had a hard time with this too. I am always messing up. I am going to a wedding around this time too. I am told it is a casual wedding, but it seems like it is getting formal. I am wearing a long dress that is black with cream flowers. I am wearing a long strand of cream pearls. I am doing the pearls because they can be casual or formal. I am wearing the dress because it can be casual or fomal. The dresses is sleveless and I have a cardigan that is a bit dressier than usual, but not too dressey. I am wearing black flats.
I am trying to hit an inbetween point. It is hard because I went to a wedding that was supposed to be "summer casual" and it ended up everyone was wearing fomal dresses. I was wearing a summer dress. My mom wore pants and a shirt. It is so confusing.
It also depends on the time of day of the wedding. Is it night or day. Where is the reception? Is it in a hotel or a back yard. I guess I would suggest going middle of the road like me. Do something that is both formal and causual like the pearls and a dress that can go either way.
What about the color Navy? It can be fomal because it is dark, but also can be more casual? Would that work? Also do you know the bride or the family of the bride? If you are comfortable ask them. This is my boyfriends sisters wedding and I have been asking her. I am still totally not sure, but I am trying. It seems that the bride wants it casual and the groom wants it formal.
Best wishes. I hope my outfit works out and yours does too.

Black to a wedding? Ha..maybe they were depressed that they weren't the ones getting married or something.
I always wear colorful dresses that express happiness.
Don't try to match everyone else. Just wear whatever you think is appropriate.

I would go with an aqua or turquoise... something not extremely sexy or conservative- maybe somewhere in the middle. You could always pair it with a cute black shrug and black heels/purse if you felt like black needed to be included (since it's close to fall).
