Since they both speak portuguese...i think it might be like a culture or language thing...like there are some cultures where the people only have one name...or maybe they just like one name....

Because their known only by their last names or their nicknames. Like with Figo... When your talking about him you don't call him Luis or Luis Figo, you call him Figo. And with Ronaldo, that's his nickname. Maniche is just a nickname too. His real name is Nuno Ricardo Oliveira Ribeiro, His nickname 'Maniche' was given after Benfica's 1980's legendary Danish forward Michael Manniche.

Well, the Brazilian players only go by one name, so that's why for the Brazilians, but I don't know why for the Portugese.

i'm not sure about Portugal but in brazil it's a kind of tradition, in fact most of the brazilian players use his nickname instead of his name or last name, like Pele (Edson Arantes Do Nascimento), others use his name instead his last name wich is common in the rest of the world, like Ronaldo (Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima)
other nations are currently adopting this tradition like spain, Raúl have his name on the jersey.
