I have owned four gerbils. It is only necessary to clean the cage every 2-3 weeks if you keep enough bedding in the tank. Apsen is best because it has no irritating oils. Gerbils do not necessarily like to be held, but they do not bite hard without provocation.
My friend has had a hamster and gerbils. The hamster cage needs to be cleaned very often because it starts to smell quickly. The hamster also would bite as soon as she saw your hand.
Gerbils kept in same sex pairs are a lot of fun to watch. They will sleep in a pile, groom each other, and occassionally chase each other. They also squeak :) I have found them very easy to take care of and have not had any problems with them being hostile to me. They are not really cuddly, but if you can be happy with holding them for a minute at a time and watching their antics, you should be quite happy.

gerbils need deep gerdilariums as they need to dig and borrow if kept In shallow cages it drives them crazy. i would say a hamster less maintenance.

GERBIL! they are sooooooooo much funner than hampsters ive had both (2 hampsters and about 11 gerbils)
