Most of America is tied to an electricity grid that is getting very old. Part of the problem has to do with things just wearing out. Another part of the problem has to do with the fact that electricity demand has increased faster than the utilities ability/willingness to expand production and transmission. And yet another factor is the training that operators may or may not have. And on top of all that, we have the vagaries of energy trading.
Like the problem, the solution must be multi-faceted.
Aging and malfunctioning power transmission components must be upgraded or replaced.
More power plants are needed to keep up with demand - consider distributed energy resources in particular, where factories or even homes generate most of their own power and feed any excess back to the grid on a net-metered basis. These power plants should obviously be largely renewable - solar, wind, biomass, etc.
Better training for grid operators, along with more intuitive control design, would help reduce the human error factor.
And stricter oversight of energy traders and utilities would help prevent the creation of artificial power outages, such as CA's rolling blackouts in Enron's heyday.
All of these things are being attempted by various parties. Unfortunately, electricity customers don't want to pay for them, nor do they want to conserve electricity or have new power plants built in their hometowns.

it is not just the power grid that needs fixing. it is a fact that the electric we use now is a.c. current right? well that means that we need a positive and a negitive for things to work. Solar flares from the sun hitting the atmosphere cause the northern lights, well guess what guys and gals that is not all it does... these particals are positively charged and history has shown that these sun flares have been so big in the past that they have completely enveloped the earth. what this means to us... when (note the use of the word when not if) this happens again it will cause the planet to no longer have a negitive place for the positive charge to go for an extended period of time meaning nothing works complete global blackout.....NewYorks power grid is the least of our problems

Not Really.. Power grid failure is just one more scheme designed to frighten and intimidate an otherwise sleepy public. We need to understand that the industrial energy complex is tightly knit with the rest of the global corporate cabal... a shaky power grid is yet another reason we should hold our elected officials that regulate and monitor the independently owned utility companies to the fire and ask how and why with the multi billion dollar quarterly profits that these utilities post for their share holders, can these types of things even be possible? When profit is the only motivation we all suffer..lights out !!!!

Oh , we have a nuclear plant in our state , have had it for 20 years , they told us that electricity price would go down . Right , never saw it , now they want to sell it to another company to tear it down . How is that giving us cheaper power ?

I also feel like this is a serious problem. It happens in my area every summer off and on. There are people who have to have the electricity for life support, or air conditioning. My son has hyperthermia in summer. (Doesn't sweat) He has to have the air. (Hyperthermia - overheated - Hypothermia - too cold)

yes I know this. things that would help are nuclear power plants, and wind farms. why do you think Senator ted Kennedy is doing his best to stop a wind farm in the ocean off Cape Cod?

In about that same time period, we will run out of oil and fresh water. The future looks a bit bleak.
