When you write lyrics try to tell some kind of story. Even if the phrases are crazy let it mean something to the listener. Try to rhyme words that haven't been used before. Listen to Cheryl Crow or the Beatles. People seem to always write about love between a man and a woman. There are other things in life too.
Learn the guitar if you can. Or collaborate with someone you can work with that is open to create. Oh and keep your songs or poems short, 3 minutes tops. If you send a demo, four songs are enough and get the verse out right away, no long intro. Go to the library of Congress website and they will tell you how to get copyright forms and send them in with your tape or CD. You can send in an unlimited amount of work per copyright and call it a "work" or collection like "Susans Fall songs 2006"
Good Luck!

Hey there

I also write songs, and i've found that the best way to push the feeling through is to sing them yourself and grab a guitar for a minimal musical support

Good luck bru...
