Why is a chair called chair and not table? Because those who invented the English language and as it developed, 11 became eleven and not onenety one. So that's why!

First of all "teen" is the correct English ending for 1X type numbers.
four-teen, fifteen, etc etc.
As for eleven and twelve -- they retained their proto-Germanic names(*ainlif and *twalif respectively “one left” and “two left”) since English used to have a based 12 counting system, not 10 based. This is the same reason we use 12 based clocks.

HQ3 is right.....11 is in the teen series. So, 11 should be oneteen, 12, twoteen or something like that......keeping with the teen logic and someone mentioned 111....that would make 111 be called "ten oneteens one" instead of one hundred eleven. :-)

Not "onenety one", "onety one". And it's because people came up with the "teens" series. For example, why is 21 "twenty-one", not "twoty-one"? Same answer, the English language is that way.
