Pot should remain illegal because, unlike alcohol, even when used in 'moderation' it is mind-altering and harmful to your health.
In layman's terms: one beer has no effect on the mind or body while one toke off a joint alters your mind and does harm to your body.

Whatever the history of banning marijuana WAS, what matters is what's been proved now, which is the link between it's use and serious mental illness (well actually, psychiatrists have known about it since the 70's - I've seen mental patients records).
Teenagers are the most vulnerable as their brains are not yet fully developed. The ones I met in psychiatric institutes (doped on anti-psychotics, blown up, stinking - they lose the urge to look after themselves) were all the ones - like you - who swore blind it was harmless. In fact most of them still were, even as they sat in front of a panel of shrinks claiming they were 'cured' enough to be released... in between their tales of voices in the head, alien threats etc...
Of course most of them end up committed for most of their lives - in and out. Until that is, they take the only way out and end it. No-one has died from it...? you are sorely sorely mistaken.
Ok i know you will probably go on believing what you want to believe and good luck to you, but i hope at least a few people read this answer and it puts them off trying cannabis, because believe me I have seen the fallout first hand and it is sad sad sad.

It should stay illegal. Thousands of innocent landlands have had their basement suites gutted and stripped bare do to illegal pot grow-ops. They are moldy and a health hazzard to children. And a fire hazzard when they steal electricity.
And YES, people have died when thugs have broken on the wrong door trying to rip off the wrong grow-op. An elderly couple died last year. Pot is not some innocent drug.

That was far too much to read and besides, the history does not matter as much as the current uses.
Yes, it should be LEGAL...if the government taxed and regulated it, they would make so much money.
You don't hear of many accidents occurring with people under the influence of JUST pot, because you get paranoid and drive the speed limit and use your blinkers and check your mirrors twice.
You don't hear of many people becoming violent under the influence of pot, because it mellows you out and makes you laugh, or puts you to sleep.
You don't hear of many people stealing to buy it or going bankrupt because of their habit, because it's relatively easy to grow and not that expensive (compared to pain pills).
It's a natural herb, with many benefits to many people and the only negative is that some people mis-use it, or grow it to trade for other drugs.
By the way, it is already "legal" in some parts of the US, both for personal and medical use...but it's still illegal to the federal government.

I still can't believe that it is illegal considering that alcohol isn't. Hmmm... what's worse. Getting so drunk you do stupid and harmful things to yourself & others, or getting so stoned that you eat too many cookies...
Hey Beach Bum up there - I have news for you... One beer actually DOES alter your state of mind and it IS harmful to your body. Maybe you are talking about a non-alcoholic beer? Because it's a well known fact that alcohol is bad for the liver, is addictive (waaaaaaaaay more so than pot), and it MOST DEFINITELY alters your state of mind.
At least you don't vomit & piss yourself when you smoke a lot of pot.

there is more important laws to talk about then this one. Especially when it comes to the question of drug use. I feel like the question of marijuana is to deflect our attention from more important things. Plus pot allows people to question the system, which is one thing the government dont want you to do.

It should be illegal because it ruins lives...I know from experience. Just because people feel its not as bad as other drugs doesn't mean it isn't damaging. I don't believe it was damaging to me physically, but it was certainly damaging mentally and in other ways (financially).

Pot should be illegal.
And while we are on the subject, let us ban the pan as well.
Yeah! That'll show those kitchen utensils.
