The game was tied 1-1 so it went down to penalty shots. Italy won, 5-3.
Zidane got a red card at 110 minutes because Materazzi said something racist or something horrible about his family.
France got their goal by a penalty kick that Zidane took at about 7 minutes into the game. It almost didn't go in. It hit the top crossbar and bounced down, just passing the goal line.
Materazzi got Italy's goal at 19 minutes.
David Trezeguet's (France) shot in the penalty shoot-out almost went in. Like Zidane's earlier goal, it hit the top crossbar and bounced down. It missed the goal line by only a few centimeters.
Italy also had a second goal during regulation time, but it was not counted because Grosso was slightly offside.
The winning penalty shot came from Grosso.
Zidane won the Addidas Golden Ball and Buffon won the Lev Yashin Award.
These are the players who took the penalty shots, in the order of who went first to last.
Italy:
Pirlo (goal)
Materazzi (goal)
De Rossi (goal)
Del Piero (goal)
Grosso (goal)
France:
Wiltord (goal)
Trezeguet (missed)
Abidal (goal)
Sagnol (goal)
It's too bad that you missed the game. Hopefully you can watch a
re-run somewhere 'cause it was excellent!

The score was tied 1-1, but Italy won 5-3 in penalties after Trezeguet from France hit the top of the goal post and Grosso from Italy made the last one. Zidane scored for France at the 6th minute of the first half, and Materazzi tied the score 12 minutes later.

Naty, yes, pretty please, I want 12 points, please.
Okay, France was the favorite to win over Italy,
they made the first goal at about 7 minutes into the game,
it was a penalty shot, just Zidane against the goalkeeper - and the
penalty was a very doubtful call. Bad arbitraging (refereeing) and it left you with a bad feeling.
Instead of sinking down, Italy continued to play and once they got their rhythm back, they scored a beautiful goal, about ten minutes later.
Then came the second half, and Italy played better but did not score.
Therefore, at 1 goal each, they went into the 30 minutes overtime
(15 mns x side), and again, nobody could score.
When the Italian Head Coach saw this, he brilliantly replaced 3 players who would have a better chance at the
Penalty kicks -- and they did.
Italy kicks first -goal
France next - goal
Italy next -goal
France next - goal
By now everybody is going absolutely berserk......!!!!!
The Stadium is ready to explode!!!
Italy next - goal
France next - hits tip of top pole and it goes OUT!
ITALY WINS
ITALY IS THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2006 WINNER
ITALY 5 to FRANCE´s 3
ITALY is still in BLISS!
So, thanks so very very very much for my 10 +2 points, Naty.
