I guess people didn't noticed you are asking about FISH (I guess). It varies by type of fish. Sometimes it's the coloring. For example, male guppies are much more colorful and have a larger tailfin than the female. In mollies, a male has a small straight 'thing' at the bottom of their belly. They move this around to place into the female. In swordtails, the male has a long pointy extension coming from the bottom of their tail, while the female has a regular short tail. The best thing to do if you can't tell by looking at them is to search on the internet or ask someone where you buy the fish.
