Bombay is the British way of saying it because they couldn't pronounce a local name (How is Mumbai hard to pronounce anyway???) Mumbai is the official name of the city. They are the same place. Say Mumbai for the same reasons Thin Ka.boudit listed, its not a joke.

Yes, it's the same place.

The appellation Mumbai is an eponym, etymologically derived from Mumba or Maha-Amba— the name of the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi, and Aai — mother in Marathi.[2] In the 16th century, the Portuguese named the area Bom Bahia (Good Bay), later corrupted to Bomaím or Bombaim, by which it is still known in Portuguese. After the British gained possession, it was anglicised to Bombay, although it was known as Mumbai or Mambai to Marathi and Gujarati-speakers, and as Bambai to Hindi-speakers.

"Bombay" is the pre-independence "Colonial" name for Mumbai. So if you don't want to have chapatis hurled at you by a bunch of angry Hindus, Muslims, Parsis, and Kolis, you best stick to "Mumbai"!
