Nothing because most jobs match whatever you deposit up to a certain amount usually 4%. At least do 401K because its like getting free money... My company matches every dime up to 4% and i am automatically 100% vested immediately.

If the 401K program has a company match, there is no better alternative than to contribute the maximum amount that will be matched. Otherwise, you are turning down free money.

If there is no company match, the best alternative is a Roth IRA, if you qualify.

An IRA is the best alternative. Even if you do have a 401k or other retirement plan at work you should invest in an IRA if you can.

buy gold and silver coins on pullbacks with your matching money and let the company contribute there portion and do NOT match with your money so you can maneuver your money yourself instead of counting on 'investment gurus' ... I manage ALL of my own money, as I don't trust the banks at all.

its not for everyone though.
