Fear. It takes a lot of courage to walk down your own path, where you could fall flat on your face or your life could be different from everyone else's.. The normal 9-5 provides security. When one is young, one tends to think more in terms of what is interesting and exciting and new. As one ages, one thinks more in terms of stability and predictability. Personally, I walked away from the 9-5 normal sure thing a few years ago and have never looked back.

It is said the difference between a dream and a goal is a date. If you set a date to achieve it, it has changed from a dream to a goal.
People settle for 9-5 jobs because of basic needs and a fear of not being able to meet those needs.
There are a lot of people who do not live the normal 9-5 lifestyle and choose to follow their dreams. Some make it ... somedon't.

I'm 13 and I have dream to start a punk rock band and become famous and do something to try to help all the poor and starving people in the world and also try to end some of the injustices in the world but I think many people abandon their dreams because they are afraid of failure and they like the money they earn in their job while if they had followed their dreams they wouldn't be sure when they where going to get more money and they probably couldn't afford too many luxuries and maybe live in a crappy apartment instead of a nice suburban house as for me I will try to make my dream come true and not to give up.

Would I like to? Yes. But so many young people set unrealistic goals for themselves and are unwilling to make the effort to make it happen. You can see the "flavor" of what I'm talking about in this forum. "How can I write a hit song?" "What college major will make me the most money?"
A young person who's only ambition is to be a "rock star" is very unlikely to have thought about the foundation needed to be a professional musician, to find the working gigs, to put in his time, just for the CHANCE to get that one break. For some, they see a program like American Idol and they only note the few weeks it takes for a person to go from obscurity to fame. All those shots of the thousands of people waiting for auditions, the clips of the horrendous performers mean very little for the person who just "knows" that they are not one of those losers.
Too many people take the mental leap of faith to the finish line without realizing that the race is long and hard. This applies to careers other than the fluff jobs. I'm gonna be a doctor. How many years of med school? I'm gonna be a pro basketball player. College? Why do I need college, I"m the best.
I'm gonna be an interner tychoon entrepreneur. Somebody give me some money.
There was a question just the other day from some good soul.. I want to start a non profit to help people of he third world. What are the organizations that give grant money? This person had no concept that the grant search was almost the LAST part of what needed to be done.

Opportunities!!!
The opportunity to change your dreams to your enviroment. Dreams are always temporary, and fickle. They are great at opening our eyes and letting us see the world in different lives. However, the real world is great too, and when people abandon their dreams for a 9-5 job/lifestyle, well, this is simply showing that their dreams have changed.
Keeping people on track to acheive their dreams is like keeping a "Smoker" away from cigarretts ... the individual has their own inner goals that change as life matures. These can be concious, or subconcious, but none-the-less, a new dream has replaced the old dream, and the individual is now going after it

It would be nice if we all could follow our dreams, however, real life doesn't work that way. In general, people abandon their dreams - or at best postpone them for awhile - because they start to grow up and have to take care of themselves. Usually this requires a job, their own place, having to pay for EVERYTHING they need (while sacrificing what they want).
Also, those dreams will change over time, and a lot of people who abandonded whatever high-hopes they may have had at one time still manage to find a lot of happiness in their lives doing the usual, boring, day-to-day things that most everyone does in their lives. They find this happiness in other things which give positive meaning to their lives while they go through the "9-5" routine each day.
