Some computers have the ATA ribbon cables AND the newer SATA cables inside. That means that if you have BOTH, you can use BOTH. But if your computer does not have the ribbon cable connectors on the motherboard, then NO. You might be able to find a Hard Drive Controller board that will work in your computer that supports the older ATA type. (some are now referring that as PATA, but old documentation will still say ATA).

They make a PCI card that has 2 SATA connectors and 1 IDE connector, so if your motherboard does not have a SATA connector you can use a SATA hdd, you will need to change the boot sequence if you want to boot from the SATA. The card was included with a maxtor SATA hdd # LO3M200

Yes you can do that, as far as you your moterboard supports SATA. Though, you can use SATA on the motherboards which have old-generic HDD plugs, you just need a convertor (it doesn't make any sense to do so).
So if you have SATA support, you can have a SATA HDD along with a generic one (as far as I know all moterboards will now support the generic HDD plugs).

If you want to use more than one HDD in your system, on of the HDD's must be Primery. Usually you can connect up to 4 HDDs (technically even more)

yes...as long as you have controllers for both. You probably have and IDE controller on your motherboard and, if it's fairly new, an SATA controller as well. If you don't have the SATA controller, you need to buy a separate card.

The other answers seem to take care of the possibility, but I would make sure not to confuse the computer about which hard drive to boot from.
