I have to agree with everyone here, you really have zero options. Neither of our two airports have ANYthing within walking distance and the cab fair to even get to a MacDonald's will cost you somewhere near $20. Cabs in Houston are outrageous, mostly because this is a sprawling city where nothing is real close to anything else. Stay put, unless you have a friend in the area. If that's the case, there are a thousand things you could do. Your name says Austin, are you from there? If so, I bet you or someone you know knows someone here. :)

The answer to your question is: no. "Inexpensive" and "quick" are mutually exclusive. Inexpensive would mean using public transportation, but that would be a challenge for someone unfamiliar with the city. Quick would mean taking a taxi, but that would not be inexpensive.

It also depends on what you're interested in. Most of the museums are near downtown, which is a 30-45 minute trip from either airport in light to moderate traffic. If you like shopping, then you could go to the Galleria, but honestly, if you have access to large malls where you're from, then I wouldn't spend cab fare to go to the Galleria.

My advice: bring a good book and/or an ipod, and plan to entertain yourself for 8 hours.

It depends on what airport you're talking about... If it's at Bush (Intercontinental) then, there are many businesses, restaurants, and a mall if you want to get a cab to drop you off and take one back... I don't remember what the fare is... However, if you're stopping at Hobby-- You're screwed!!! It's in the middle of the freakin Barrio and MOST anything interesting is quite a drive away... There are more things to do at Bush because it's an international hub; Hobby only has one terminal that ALL airlines go through so there is literally nothing to do but sleep or wait... Get a good book or go up to the sports bar and chat up a storm with some peeps... just don't get so sloshed that you forget your flight or get arrested. Good Luck!!!

No, don't leave the airport, especially if you are at Hobby Airport. If you are intercontinental and you are able to get to it, go to terminal E. It is the nicest and newest and has some good places to eat and just sit around.

Nope, not if you don't want to rent a car. Eight hours is a long time, you could do a lot if you rented a car.
