I'd have to say grass. At least it is easier to roll and smoke that gravel is.

Gravel is quick to put down but a nightmare if you forget to put a weed-control sheet down first. Cats sometimes use it as a litter tray.
Grass is much nicer to look at in the spring time when it's nice & green but also needs loads of mowing at the same time. Doesn't grow well in the shade or near conifers where it is dry & acid. Not so good if you live in a drought area.
I once considered getting astroturf, but it costs a fortune.

Grass is better than gravel as it is better for wildlife in general and it looks lovely too.

You don't have to mow gravel...but grass is nice to walk on bare foot.

Gravel paths and beds around your house and under the windows annoys burglars, so thats good.
Grass smells good when you mow it. And you can sit on it.
