The book 'The Exorcist' was based on the case of a 14 yr old boy in 1949. There was good compelling evidence that this kid was genuinely possessed and not mentally or physically ill.

In the 70s Anneliese Michel's family had her exorcised because they felt the medical community could do nothing because it was a spiritual matter not a medical one. However, there's a lot of evidence that she simply suffered from epilepsy, but being a religious person she was convinced it was the fault of demons (Lucifer, Cain, Nero, Judas, Fleishmann, Hitler.)

She was given Tegretol, which caused epileptic obnubilation, and she died as a result.
According to the state prosecutor her death could have been prevented at least one week before she died, so he charged her family and 2 priests. They were found guilty of manslaughter.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is indeed based on Anneliese Michel, a young German Christian woman who died in 1976 after failed attempts to "exorcise" demons from her. She believed herself to be possessed by at least six demons. A trial was held after her death to determine if the two religious men and her parents should be held responsible for her death. All four were found guilty or manslaughter, but received minimal sentences.

the movie is based on facts of what happened at an exocism performed on a teenage girl named Annalise (from what I've heard).
there a so many performed each year that it is hard to say which one it is actually based on. however, we do hear about them when the child dies (the families usually come back with "it was God's way").
most times the exorcism is performed because the parents are full-on bible-bashers, or stuck so far back in the dark-ages that they don't really know what's going on (refer to Carrie, her mother told her she was "dirty" and "a whore" because of her "fun-bags" and bleeding).
personally I think that there is a lot of re-education needed, especially with this sort of stuff happening in this day and age. I do stand up and say my part when they're trying to ban sex-ed at schools - they want to remove it from the 12-13 year olds (lots of kids are actually starting at this age group nowadays).
I know I went off the topic, sorry.
