Of course he deserved the red card... but the Italian guy too ! He insulted his mum (who deid when zaidane was 10) and his sister... and he did it 3 times !! Zaidane staid calm at first... but this *********** continued ! Ok maybe Zaidane should have stay clam... I was really angry at him first ! But he's still a human, and a normal human can't stand that !! Guys like Mattarozzi shouldn't win the world cup !! I hope he feels realy guilty for winning the world cup like that. If he hadn't insulted Zaidane, then I would have accepted the French defeat... right now I just don't.

No of course not, not under the circumstances that he did receive it. If the ref actually and clearly saw the incident, then yes immediately on the spot he should received the red along with Materazzi for his racist remarks. However, since the ref didn't see it and the lines man didn't see it either, then NO (according to FIFA the fourth official saw it, but I'm not buying it, and send the message to the ref via the ear set. This is clearly BS, since the ref was busy sorting out what was going on for a few minutes and consolidating the linesman for a split second, whom by the way was talking to Buffon and was near the Italian bench, hint! So if the fourth official saw it, the red card would have been shown on the spot however it wasn't. So the linesman saw the replay or somebody else saw the replay (fourth official) and sent the message. Personally, if I was the fourth official and I "saw" that, I would be screaming for assistance and running to the field myself. If they are going to watch the replays for this and they should watch all the replays before giving reds, yellows, PKs and fouls. All rules should be obeyed by the refs at all times)

Yes, definately. But the real question is how many games will he get suspended.
Me being in his head, I would probably had cripled the Italian for the verbal insult. Could even be a cultural issue. Imagine insulting an Afghani's mama.
On the other hand, rules have been set and verbal procation, spitting, diving into the legs and pulling the shirt are cemented synonims of soccer; part of the game. Too bad penalizing these is such an issue.

i already answered it before... here is the exact copy:
It was more then fair. I'll tell you why.
point one. if you watch the replay you will see Zidane take 4 quicksteps, turn around, runs at Materazzi and assaults him physically with a "head butt" to the chest. As per fifa rulebook used for world cup play and I quote:
"Article 47 Physical injury <<<<-------
1. A player who deliberately assaults someone physically or damages his health will be suspended for at least four matches. An official who commits such an infringement will be suspended for at least eight matches.
2. The suspension shall be imposed at every level (local, national and international).
3. In any case, the body will impose a minimum fine of CHF 5,000. In the caseof tournaments with an age limit, the fine can be reduced appropriately.
Article 48 Violence
1. A player who deliberately assaults someone, but without harming him physically or damaging his health, will be suspended for at least two matches. An official who commits such an infringement will be suspended for at least four matches.
2. If a person assaults someone by spitting at him, he will be suspended for at least six matches.
3. In any case, the body will also impose a fine amounting to at least CHF 5,000. In the case of tournaments with an age limit, the fine can be reduced appropriately.
Zidane did committed this foul full well knowing that the rules would not apply to him because he had already anounced his retirment. The worst thing he would recieve is only a red card.
If you want more reasons as to why he should and did recieve a red card then you'll have to pay a $5.00 consulting fee for my answers. Thank you and Vive L'italia!
PS The code does not apply to Materazzi because he did not make any comments PUBLICLY!!

yes, deserved, but :
Newest Fifa regulations from March 2006 against racism: If Players or Officials of a team act discriminating according to Articel 55 Part 1 and/or 2, in games without points such team will be disqualified, in games with points automatically loose 3 points. Discriminating words can be related to race, religion, language, or heritage.
Fifa has just started an investigation today.
So its cleary stated that racists cannot be champions.

Yes, definitely... you can't just headbutt a guy in the middle of a game and expect to get away with it.. I mean it's not within the rule/tradions of soccer, it's what makes it a great game I think, how respectful it is.

Without a doubt. It was a nice Chuck Norris move, but if two Americans were 'sent off' in one game for girly little fouls, this guy should be locked up. I still wonder what provoked such a 'judo-headbutt.'
