What month do I find out the sex of the baby? Why does my doctor want me to come in to have a check up at 8 weeks of pregnancy?

I found out the sex of both of my kids around 19 weeks. Most drs will want to see you every 4 weeks or once a month until around 34 weeks when some might have you start coming in every week. They just want to make sure that your blood pressure, weight gain, and urine samples are all normal and there is nothing wrong with your pregnancy.

Good prenatal care is a MUST. Women that do not have proper prenatal care have a higher chance of having a baby die from SIDS in the first 6 months of life. The sex of the baby cannot be determined until around 18-20 weeks. Doctors will usually schedule prenatal visits for every 4 weeks until the last few weeks, unless there is a problem and then it will be every two weeks.

I am now 17 weeks pregnant and the sex will be determined between 18-20 weeks. That is only if the baby is not in a bad position to tell. I'll be getting my ultrasound in a couple weeks - hopefully they'll be able to tell. My doctor wanted to see me when I first found out I was pregnant - check my blood pressure, weight, give me information, and go over any questions I had. It was more of a consultation.

The sex of the baby can be seen at about 16 weeks or later via ultrasound. The check up at 8 weeks is just to see how you and the baby are doing. This website shows what to expect at your prenatal visit---

I'm pretty sure they can't determine the sex of the baby until about 18-20 weeks. You'd have better luck waiting until closer to 20.

As for the 8 week check up, it's normal. You're supposed to go for monthly check ups until the last month. Then you're supposed to go weekly. They just want to make sure everything is fine and you aren't gaining too much weight and you're keeping yourself healthy. Stuff like that.

Most OBGYN's wait until 12 weeks for the first appointment because most miscarriages occur in the first trimester. Your OBGYN may prefer sooner or may be cautious because of the patient's age. Mothers that are teenagers and women 35 and older are considered high risk. At 16 weeks or later ultra sound may be able to predict the sex of the fetus. sometimes the fetus is turned in such a way that the genitalia cannot be visualized. Be sure to write down all your questions so you won't forget them when you talk to your doctor. Congratulations!
