Was Owen the son of God? He certainly seems to meet the criteria. I could never figure out the armadillo...

I believe that John came to accept that Owen was more than human, that he had a special place on this earth, and was, in fact, a chosen one. His small size and high voice enabled him to save the children at the end. And coming up with the "jump" that got the bomb out the window, well, that's a little too far out for coincidence! But he was very human, too - his lack of control over his erections when he was young... his relationship with Hester.. his anger at his parents. I'm not giving a very good answer but the book raised many questions for me. As for the title, I guess it means that John is saying prayers either TO Owen, or on behalf of his childhood friend, just as we say prayers to Jesus or God.
