It's derived from a biblical story about Moses. The Isrealites had gotten out of Egypt and were crossing the desert, and they were complaining. It must've sounded to God like kids in the back seat whining about how long it was taking to get there. So, He sent snakes to poison them. But, then, He told Moses to make an image of a snake and put it on his pole, and whoever looked at it would be cured of their snake bites. The snake and the staff became the symbol of healing for the medical sciences.
