The aurora borealis appears mainly in the "auroral zone", a ring-shaped region about 2500 km radius around the magnetic north pole of the Earth (not the geographic north pole). It is hardly ever seen near that pole itself. If I remember correctly, this ring is fairly thick and is located at about 10 degrees laterally about the pole. But remember that the magnetic pole is a good 11.3 degrees off the axial pole on the average, and even this changes from year to year, so the optimum viewing location will change depending upon your longitude. Because the current location of the magnetic pole is somewhere in Northern Canada, the aurora may be seen further south in the western hemisphere than in the eastern hemisphere.

between Fairbanks and Barrow Alaska. Mayo and Faro, Yukon north of Whitehorse is also ideally situated for great viewing.

My favorite time to view the aurora is in late August when a soft twilight is still visible all night, the temperatures are pleasant, and the bugs are minimal (however, cloud cover could be a major problem).

Calgary in Canada. Saw them myself on holiday - totally amazing. Stayed in the north of Scotland for a while and saw them, but not the display I saw in Canada - fabulous!

Alaska. Fairbanks is a great place to see them, but if you don't want to travel that far north, I've actually been lucky enough to see them in Anchorage. That was one awesome night!
