Ban final salary schemes in the public sector.

I'm having to reduce my pension contributions because my council tax keeps rising to fund the black hole in the council scheme.

Not fair!

There needs to be a system where the people producing wealth support those who don't - because they're too young, too old or unable to work.
State pensions work by taxing those in work to support those who are retired. That's OK if the number of retired people is small compared to those in work. Because people are living longer, the number of retired people will soon outnumber those in work. Not many people are prepared to suffer high taxation just to support the old man next door.
Private pensions work by investing in the economy. The profit still comes from the people who work for the companies that the pension funds invest in. With more old people, you'd need more and more profit to pay their pensions. Entrepreneurs would simply set up new companies that don't have all these pensioners taking the profits.
So that leaves two answers. Either we work until we're 90, or they start shooting us when we get to 75.
