Do wolves really howl at the moon, or is that just some sort of Hollywood image we've had drilled in to us?

Howling at the moon would be a waste of breath. However, wolves may be more active when they can see by the light of a full moon. Howling can be dangerous because most modern wolves die (in protected areas) when attacked by rival packs defending their territory and prey. It pays to keep the yap shut!

The howl of a wolf is not done at the moon--it appears so because most of their howling comes at night and the fact that the throwing back of the head to facilitate the howl makes it appear so---to those that have studied this they can tell you that there is alot more going on in the howl of a wolf than simply the contact with others--along with the other reasons--many think that this is a thing where certain wolves have a moment to vent their feelings to others by way of this action (kind of an open mike night for wolves one might say)

Well wolves do howl when a moon is up, they also howl when there is no moon and they howl in the day time. So no not strictly at the moon.

I once owned a wolf and he did howl but not at the moon. He would howl if their was going to be a thunderstorm or something.

No, they don't. That's a hollywood image. They do howl however to warn others away from their individual territory and to communicate with others.
