Despite the wide range of recycled plastics applications, the actual tonnage of waste plastic which is returned to the material cycle is relatively small. Currently, recycled plastics are rarely used in food packaging - the biggest single market for plastics - because of concerns about food safety. A method of addressing this problem is by enclosing the recycled plastic between layers of virgin plastic to ensure the packaging conforms to hygiene standards. These multi-layered containers are now being used in some drinks bottles, but recycling cannot eliminate the colours from plastics so they cannot be used in transparent or light coloured applications.
Another constraint on the use of recycled plastics is that, to be economically viable, plastic processors require large quantities of recycled plastics, manufactured to tightly controlled specification at a competitive price in comparison to that of virgin polymer. This is a challenging task, particularly in view of the diversity of sources of waste plastics, the wide range of polymers used and the high potential for contamination of plastics waste.

One of the main disadvantages of plastic made from petrochemicals is its durability: once an object is no longer required, it becomes a problem in terms of waste disposal. There are some more degradable plastics made from starch from foods such as corn or cassava but the cost of these is still higher than that of conventional plastics.
Food packaging, the main use of plastic, becomes waste very quickly compared to other plastic items. Because most plastics take hundreds of years to break down when placed in landfill, the increasing amount of plastic waste is placing great pressure on limited space. The recycling of plastic is therefore a useful means of delaying its entry to the waste stream.

Plastics are so light that even compressed right down a lorryload costs more to transport than can ever be made by recycling it!
In the states a couple of the plasics companies do recycle some and turn it into plastic boardwalks in conservation areas.
There are some plastics cominmg onto the market now which are biodegradeable in a matter of weeks.

If you burn plastic, it releases toxic fumes.
I would definately call that a disadvantage.
You can recycle it, but the costs of sorting the different types of plastics (the labor) is not very cost effective.
This is why so many counties export their recycling to countries with lax labor laws.

Plastic, dispose of it at a recycling centre or box... big advanage is it will be recycled!
Disadvantage of not doing this, is it will take many years too rot, if just thrown.

Plastics are the only thing my council wont collect for recycling, its too expensive and causes more probs than it cures.
Plastic milk containers should be outlawed, tetra pacs ( paper ones ) are just as good.

Nowadays, Landfill and burning waste plastic is not the only way to disposal waste plastic. Moreover landfill and burning will cause pollution to environment and also waste lots of land. And now waste plasticcan recycle by waste plastic recycling machine then pyrolysis waste plastic to fuel oil and diesel under some conditions.
But, what benefits we can get from recycling waste plastic?
First, we can get fuel oil, carbon black by pyrolysis. In Mexico, our customer told us, fuel oil price is about 650usd per ton. And also diesel oil has a nice price about 800usd per ton. Let’s see a profit analysis from Macedonia client his material is waste tyres, waste plasic have a good price and good oil quality than tyres:
Profit analysis from Macedonia customer(10 tons tires capacity)
No Item Cost of each batch
1 10 tons of waste tire 10T*USD 42.5/T=USD 425
2 0.4 tons of coal 0.4T*USD 70/T=USD 28
3 Electricity and water 244kwh*USD 0.26=USD63.44
4 Workers 4*USD 15=USD 60
Total cost USD 576.44
Income for one batch
1 Crude oil 4.5T*USD 960=USD 4,320
2 Steel wire 10T*15%*USD 350/T=USD 525
3 Carbon black 3T*USD 20/T=USD 60
Total income USD 4,905
Profit
1 Daily profit USD 4,328.56
2 Month profit USD 4328.56*25 days=USD 108,214
3 Annual proft USD 108,214*10month=USD 1,082,140
In addition, in some place, the recycler of waste tyres can get some allowance from the local government. Waste tyres recycling machine become more and more popular.
