I have visited France many times before. All of the french seemed to truly love Americans, and were always willing to help. They were very polite. Why do the french have such a bad reputation?

I suggest that everybody compare the google number of results between the sentence "I hate the French" (28 600) and "Je déteste les Américains" (55) or "Je hais les Américains" (48).
Recently many conservative media personalities and politicians have made deliberate efforts to exacerbate the anti-French sentiment. So my theory is that you expect people to react against you as you are doing against them. We hadn't any "anti-american" campain in the French press, that's why French are not hating the American people.
What is true on the other hand, is that French (like other European nations, and maybe less than some other European nations) doesn't like at all the actual American Governement.

I agree, whenever I have been in France the people have been really nice, I liked France and the French people a lot. Maybe its because they got ridiculed by pro war US people when France urged the US to stay out of Iraq. Too bad we didn't listen to our friends.
